Is Internet Poker Legal?

Since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was passed in 2006, it’s become more complicated to play online poker in the US. The law didn’t make online poker illegal, but it made it much harder for companies to offer their services to American players.

For a long time, there were no major US-friendly poker sites, but that started to change in 2013. A few small sites popped up, and then a couple of major players entered the market.

The two biggest US-friendly poker sites are Bovada and Ignition Casino. Both of these sites are owned by the same company, and they’re pretty much the only game in town if you want to play online poker for real money in the US.

Bovada and Ignition aren’t the only poker options available to Americans, but they’re by far the biggest and most popular. There are a few other small sites that operate in a legal grey area, but they’re not nearly as large or well-known as Bovada and Ignition.

So is online poker legal in the US? It’s a complicated question, but the short answer is yes, it is legal to play online poker for real money in the US.
